Collision Inside Hydropower Tunnel in Uttarakhand Leaves Over 10 Workers Injured
At least 10–12 workers were injured after two locomotive trains collided inside a THDC hydropower tunnel in Pipalkoti, Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Some workers are reported to be in critical condition as authorities launch an investigation and review safety protocols at the project site.
The incident occurred in Pipalkoti, where construction work is underway at a tunnel operated by THDC India Limited as part of a major hydropower project. According to preliminary information from local officials, the collision took place inside the tunnel during routine operations, causing panic among workers present at the site. Several labourers sustained injuries in the impact, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Emergency response teams were immediately mobilised following the accident. Rescue personnel worked inside the tunnel to evacuate the injured, who were subsequently shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities confirmed that relief and rescue operations were carried out promptly to prevent further harm and to ensure the safety of other workers at the site.
District administration officials said an inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the collision. Safety procedures and operational protocols at the project site are being reviewed as part of the investigation. Officials also stated that further action would be taken based on the findings of the probe.
The accident has once again brought attention to safety challenges associated with large-scale infrastructure projects in mountainous regions like Chamoli, where complex terrain and underground construction demand strict adherence to safety standards. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to assess whether additional safeguards are required to prevent similar incidents in the future.
